Vicar’s Column

This past Sunday our Gospel reading offered a selection of images on the Kingdom of Heaven. “And again, Jesus said, the Kingdom of Heaven is like…”  Pondering on this phrase, we shared what the Kingdom can be at St. Catherine’s today. What images and understandings come to mind? Which of these images bring comfort? Are there images that challenge us as well?

At St. Catherine’s we usually gravitate towards love as the first answer to most theological questions. Other sharings included acceptance, welcome, forgiveness, and going out in the world to discover that the Kingdom is already present in so many places and ways.

At an even broader level, our Presiding Bishop and Executive Council challenge us with the image of “The Beloved Community.”  As we seek reconciliation, justice, inclusion and respect for all human beings, our church leadership is equipping us with images and methodologies that invite us to live fully into the Kingdom today.

This fall, we continue this work  within our St. Catherine’s community. We shall look for understanding, images and practices that remind and tell us who we are, and look for next steps in building our identity, ministries and mission on Beloved Community and the Kingdom of Heaven that Jesus taught and modeled.
